Terracon is pleased to announce that we have recently purchased new Pile Driving Analyzer® (PDA) system equipment.
The Pile Driving Analyzer (PDA) system is the most widely employed system for Dynamic Load Testing and Pile Driving Monitoring in the world. High Strain Dynamic Load Tests, also called PDA tests, assess the capacity of several piles in a single day. Pile Driving Analyzer systems also evaluate shaft integrity, driving stresses, and hammer energy when monitoring installation.
The purpose of the High-Strain Dynamic Pile Testing is to determine the force and velocity response of individual vertical or batter pile to an impact force applied axially by a pile driving hammer or similar device that will cause a large strain impact to the top of the pile, in accordance with ASTM D-4945-00. The data is also used to conduct CAPWAP analysis for the pile. This test method is applicable to deep foundation units that function in a manner similar to foundation piles, regardless of their method of installation provided that they are receptive to high strain impact testing.
Our well trained and certified team together with our previous work experience will guarantee to deliver high quality services to our clients, and performing independent verification testing and analysis.
PDA services can provide clients with foundation cost savings through time and material efficiencies. Terracon PDA services include Driveability Study, Wave Equation Analysis (WEAP), Dynamic Pile Testing (PDA), Signal Matching Analysis (CAPWAP®), Hammer Performance, Pile Damage Identification, Total Ultimate Static Resistance (Bearing Capacity), Engineering Recommendations (Driving Criteria), and Independent Verification Testing.

We are saddened to announce the passing of a friend and former Terracon colleague, Anant Prasad, on July 6, 2016 at the age of 80. Anant worked with Terracon for 14 years and retired in July 2015 as the Vice President HSE & HR, a Director and a Shareholder. He played an instrumental role in shaping Terracon’s values, and, alongside all our employees, is one of the main reasons Terracon has earned a reputation for its unwavering commitment to safety and quality. He was a man of wisdom, integrity, professionalism and loyalty, and he inspired a generation of employees who understand that these traits are fundamental to a long and rewarding career.
Anant’s career spanned over 50 years holding senior technical and management roles in both industry and government at organizations which included Imperial Oil, Kaiser Resources, and the Iron Ore Company of Canada. Prior to joining Terracon, Anant was the Director and Chief Inspector of Mines for the province of Alberta where his primary responsibility was to oversee health and safety in the mining industry and to enforce the Occupational Health and Safety Act and Regulations. During his career at Terracon, Anant was instrumental in developing, implementing and maintaining Terracon’s HS&E program while being a key member of the Company’s Board of Directors and Senior Management Team.
Anant will be missed by all of us, but we will always remember him and all that he did for his profession, and for his family, friends and colleagues.

We don’t think anyone will soon forget the Fort McMurray wildfires that caused so much devastation to many of our friends, family and colleagues. We are encouraged by the determination of the many strong and capable men and women of our Ft. McMurray community who have the firm resolve to rebuild their home and community. We are proud to work beside them and share this resolve. We would like to thank all our employees, clients, vendors and colleagues for their patience and support as we continue ramp back up our business and services to our clients.
Terracon’s office and lab facilities have been cleaned and are open for business! We are happy to report that our employees and their families are returning back to Fort McMurray and are eager to get back to work. We intend to share this good fortune as we actively seek opportunities to contribute to the restoration and reconstruction of our community. Let’s all work together to rebuild this great city we all call HOME!
May 16, 2016
After a difficult and challenging week, Terracon can happily report that all of our 115 local employees and their families are safe and have successfully evacuated the Wood Buffalo region. Throughout this disaster, our primary goal has always been the safety and health of our employees and their families. Despite the devastation our region has experienced, it’s heartwarming to see the support that fellow Albertans and Canadians have provided to us in a time of need. It’s a reminder of the generosity and kindness that exists in today’s world. We would also like to recognize the absolutely heroic efforts of the men and woman who have been fighting this fire since day one. It is due to those efforts that every single battle to protect particular areas and infrastructure was successful. The bridge that connects the north to the south of town, the hospital, water treatment plant, airport and many more, are all still standing because of those people. We would also like to take a moment to applaud and thank the various industry accommodations, travel coordinators, families, friends and fellow employees who have aided in the successful evacuation and subsequent safety housing of our Terracon family.
On a positive note, according to local authorities the RMWB’s initial damage assessment shows that the majority of our community’s infrastructure is still intact and functioning. From these reports we can surmise that Terracon’s regional office in Fort McMurray is still standing and will be operational once the authorities allow us to enter the city. At this point and until further notice, all operations will be run out of our Calgary office. We are still able to provide all services and look forward to continuing to support our clients both within the Oil Sand community and across Western Canada.
We look forward to returning home and continuing to support and rebuild the community that we have been a part of for the last 33 years. During this difficult time, we encourage that each of you focus your time on your family, friends, and loved ones. In the meantime, please contact our Calgary office if there is anything that we can do to help at 403.266.1150
Despite the devastation and incomprehensible loss that Fort McMurray and its citizens have suffered this past week during the #ymmfire, Terracon is pleased to be able to share the positive and joyous news that one of our Managers, Jordan Boudreau, is a proud new father of a beautiful baby girl! Terracon is pleased to announce the official opening of our Calgary South field services and materials testing facility. This facility will serve as a Soils and CCIL (Canadian Council of Independent Laboratories) certified Concrete Testing Laboratory, in addition to acting as a hub for our southern based field services operations.
The Calgary South facility will add to our existing operations from where we have successfully served clients in the fields of Civil and Geotechnical Engineering, Geology, Construction Monitoring and Materials Testing Services, for over 30 years. The new facility complements our downtown Calgary operation and is a natural extension to our very successful Northern Alberta field operations which operates in the Fort McMurray region. After a remarkable career spanning 50 years, 29 of which have been with Terracon Geotechnique Ltd., Emmett Horne has made the decision to retire as Terracon’s full time Chief Geologist and transition to a part time position as Senior Geological Consultant effective January 1st, 2014.
Lee Nichols, President of Terracon, says, “Emmett has been an integral part of Terracon’s leadership team these last 30 years, and instrumental in creating the client-focused culture that we enjoy today. He has always lead by example whether it was through his patience, professionalism, and entrepreneurial spirit, or just by spending countless days in the field working with our younger professionals and our clients. We are fortunate to be able to continue to tap into his deep knowledge and passion for geosciences through this transition period in his career.”
We would like to thank Emmett for everything that he has done for Terracon, for the countless geologists that he has mentored over the years, and for his service to the profession of Geology. All the best Emmett and tight fishing lines!

In 2004, the provincial public health care institutions in Canada spent a staggering 20 billion dollars addressing injuries that occurred to citizens both on and off the workplace. Terracon believes that this figure could be substantially reduced if a culture of safety “attitude and habits” could be improved on and off the job. One of the best ways to influence a national health and safety culture is to introduce university level education exclusively focused on HS&E – Risk Control, Safety and Loss Management disciplines. At present, programs of this nature do not exist at the university level and are not taught as a core competency.
In January, 2012, Terracon’s President, Lee Nichols, sent a letter to the ten provincial premiers and three territorial leaders strongly encouraging them to introduce HS&E educational programs at the baccalaureate and graduate level. In 2012, working in collaboration with the University of Alberta’s Department of Engineering, a team of Terracon volunteers spearheaded awareness of the University of Alberta model HS&E degree program. That awareness and justification for the model, society’s need for more highly trained and skilled safety professionals was also shared with the Premiers and Territorial leaders of Canada for their consideration.
“We believe that university level training to graduate Professional Engineers in the specialist discipline of Risk Management and Loss Control on and off the job would favourably impact Canada’s overall culture of safety”, said Lee. “And we hope that the government and territorial leaders will carefully consider our model as a first step in making this goal a reality”.
In 2011, Terracon was honoured to have been chosen one of the 50 Best Small and Medium Employers in Canada. The award is an invaluable measure of employee engagement, and gives employers direct feedback on the intellectual and emotional commitment employees have in their workplace. We are extremely proud that our employees have such a positive view of the company, says President, Lee Nichols, and we are motivated to continue our efforts to make it an enjoyable and safe place to work.
