His passion culminated with being honoured in 2013 with the Work Safe Alberta Occupational Health and Safety Individual Achievement Award.

While Lee continues in his role as Chairman of the Board of Directors, the Senior Management Team will continue to lead the organization as a group. An Executive Leadership Committee has been established to liaise with the Board and will consist of Jake Rubenstein (Chief Operating Officer), Shaun Gawryliuk (Chief Financial Officer), and Julie Falls (Chief People Officer).

Lee states, "On a personal note, next year on May 31, 2023, I will be celebrating 60 years of continuous professional service in the practical application of earth sciences to the resource and infrastructure sectors. The most memorable attributes of my 60-year career have been the collection of personal relationships, friendships, and partnerships. Thank you for your friendship, collaborative advice and many contributions accumulated over these many years. I look forward to many more in my guidance role."

2023 will also mark Terracon’s 40th year in business. Our success over the years has only been through the hard work, creativity, and resiliency of our people, who share common values of Safety, Integrity, Teamwork, and Entrepreneurism. Our SITE values have truly guided the organization over the last 40 years and are built into everything we do. Terracon Recognizes September 30th as a National Day for Truth & Reconciliation

September 30th, 2022 marks the second annual National Day for Truth & Reconciliation. It honours the Indigenous children who never came home as well as the survivors of residential schools, their families and communities.

We encourage all our employees to take the time to reflect on the importance of this day. On our own path of reconciliation, we are committed to creating meaningful relationships with the Indigenous communities in which we work. We continue to support and participate in local events to build our individual and collective awareness of Indigenous cultures, values and traditions. We are working to support education of Indigenous youth through scholarships.

At the same time, we are investing significant resources to promote the values of diversity, inclusion and equality within our business as we recognize that education is not only fundamental to a respectful workplace, but also critical towards reconciliation, and avoiding the mistakes of the past.

The National Centre for Truth & Reconciliation quotes The Honourable Murray Sinclair who said, "Education is what got us into this mess, and education will get us out."

Emmett Horne (1943 – 2022)

July 18, 2022

We are saddened to announce the passing of a dear friend and former Terracon colleague, Emmett Horne, on July 12, 2022 at the age of 78.

As a founding member of Terracon and Chief Geologist, Emmett's career spanned 50 years, 29 of them with Terracon. Emmett was a major contributor to Terracon's early success in the earth sciences field, particularly as a geological consultant working with clients to fully understand and responsibly develop their resources. He was particularly passionate about developing oil sand models and geophysical and core logging protocols for the characterization and description of oil sand commercial reserves. His historical and scientific knowledge of the Alberta oil sands was highly sought after by clients and was a tremendous asset to their resource development. Throughout his career, Emmett has been an integral part of Terracon's leadership team, and always led by example by demonstrating his patience and professionalism, or just by spending countless days in the field working with our younger staff and clients.

Even into his retirement in 2014, he always enjoyed reconnecting with staff and former industry colleagues. He was both an ardent supporter of the environment and the responsible development of our resources, and in 2017, Emmett was awarded CIM's Award of Distinction in honour of his significant contributions to the industry over the years. Emmett's enthusiasm and entrepreneurial spirit had a tremendous impact on so many people. We express our deepest sympathy to his family and all that knew him. He will be truly missed by all.
